I know that a lot of the TC88's are known to have this issue, but it is getting annoying now. I posted this on our sister forum, www.thebikersite.com and got lots of suggestions. Now I am re-posting it here because all of the things that they suggested I had already tried. Here is the issue, when I back out of the throttle, no matter how much, no matter the temperature of the bike or ambient, it backfires. Usually just once, but sometimes multiples. And it is usually loud. Loud as in when I went through my old neighborhood, the locals would hide behind cars or hit the deck. It is a bone stock 2000 FLHTCUI. For those that don't know Harley's hieroglyphics, that is an Ultra Classic Injected. I have checked all of the injector seals, the intake tract seals, plugs, wires, electrical connections, exhaust seals, and everything else I could think of. The dealer tell me that it is a trait of this bike. But that is an unacceptable answer. I know others with the same bike, and some do it, and some don't. I do know that of the others that I know, the ones that do backfire all seem to have a little better performance, and a little less fuel mileage. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Why did we do it, because we can do it better.

Buf, are you carbureted pr injected? If you are carbureted check an dsee if you lost the fitting off your breather hose going to the carb. Basically waht it is for is so the carb does not suck in too much air or god forbid water or dirt.

FLHTCUI. Ultra Classic Injected. If it were carbed, that hose would do it. Can't find anything loose or sucking air.

Bufie... Can't offer you much aside from a similar problem common to a Venture.... Backing out of the throttle results in a shotgun blast back fire... Now ,I don't know if the newer HD's are equipped in a like manner, but the Venture has a AIS (Air Induction System) The AIS is an emissions system which introduces oxygen-bearing air into the exhaust ports on the exhaust stroke. This induces further combustion of hydrocarbons in the exhaust pipe and greatly reduces emissions. It is driven by intake vacuum pulses. The only purpose of this system is to help satisfy our good old EPA requirements. Though good in theory, it's bad in that under certain conditions it can cause a HUGE backfire on deceleration that actually sounds like a shotgun going off. Disabling the AIS is a simple process and one that will not affect the performance of your bike in any way. On a Venture , it's a simple procedure to locate and plug the ports.... The backfiring completely stopped after this fox... The AIS helps the bike meet the emissions standards, so I am guessing maybe the HD's have a something similar on them... This covers all Ventures 1999 through current...

I will have to check in the manual and see if we have something similar. I know that on my Maxim's we had a system called YICS. Yamaha Induction Control System that we used to disable to stop the backfiring. Thanks for the ideal Hoppy.

Have you checked for any exhaust leaks? Sometimes they will backfire or pop with the loss in back pressure. I would have said it might be too little back pressure, but I have rode next to stock Goldwing's that are louder than your bike.

That's a good point Tugs...I was surprised at how so tiny of a leak could backfire so loud.... I had a 1100 Honda that had a loose bolt on the exhaust header...just barely loose and it would scare the shit outta people when I rolled off the throttle..especially if we'd been cruising at a stead speed like 55 or so...LOL

I had a smilar issue a couple of years ago. Turned out the crossover was loose and wasn't sealed properly. Tightened it up and the backfiring and flames that freaked out the people behind me was no more. I also have a friend who had his high performance motor rebuilt and his was backfiring on deceleration. The mechanic told him he could tweak the motor (air/fuel mixture I beleive) to avoid it but it might cause the bike to run a little lean. He chose to leave it alone and has had no problems...except when he scared a deer into jumping into his path...almost killed him...killed the deer.
Hope this helps...

ms, I have enough issues with deer. Ramped one on my way to Leesburg, and my guardian angle warned me of another standing broadside in the road last week. But I will check for leaks. Nothing obvious. Tug's, my bike is quiet for a reason, sometimes you just like to be able to sneak up on the unsuspecting. Bike has 70,000 on the odo, and it has worked so far. Hard to fix what ain't broken.

Been taking Beano just to rule that out. Maybe if I put some Beano in the gas tank, yeah, that's it, beano in the tank. Now that you mention it, a lot of our gas does come here from Mexico.
